I was so afraid to open up about what happened to me, and I always blamed myself. My anxiety used to take over, and I couldn’t sleep at night. But everything changed when I started attending Group Therapy. I began to feel appreciated and supported. I found sisters in this group with whom I could talk about anything. Through this group, I have found peace, and I am incredibly thankful for it.

#BreakFree Anti-Violence Campaign

The #BreakFree Pillar prioritises gender-based violence (GBV) support, advocacy, and prevention. It provides trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, safe spaces, and counselling to help survivors heal. Through peer support and emergency response services, young people receive the care they need to rebuild their lives.

Beyond support, the pillar promotes GBV prevention through awareness, education, and community engagement, fostering a zero-tolerance culture. In collaboration with the #BeFree Youth Campus, it also offers mental health and social welfare services, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all young people to heal and thrive.

Case management

Case Management is the process of providing protection and support to individual children, youth and their families who are vulnerable to certain risks, directly or through referral services, and following that process through until goals are met.

This process makes it possible for the helping profession to ensure that interventions are tailored to the needs of the individual members. The #BeFree Youth Campus is currently working directly with the youth aged 13-35 years.

Increasing Engagement

#BreakFree has awareness-raising activities that are tailored to provide maximum impact. Our annual engagements are the #BreakFree Mental Health Conversations, Game Changers (Focused on discussing mental health among men) and the National GBV-F Arts Competition during 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence and Femicide.

To deepen the reach and effectiveness of our engagements, #BreakFree integrates both innovative and inclusive approaches to ensure that all demographics are represented and heard. These activities are designed to spark dialogue, provide resources, and empower individuals to take action against violence in their communities.

Capacity Building and Training

Through capacity building and training for frontline service providers, we enhance the skills, knowledge, and resources of individuals who directly interact with the public, enabling them to perform their roles effectively and efficiently. This involves providing targeted learning opportunities and support to strengthen their abilities, improve service delivery, and address the evolving needs of the communities they serve.

The #BreakFree Campaign places significant emphasis on capacity building and training as a key strategy to combat gender-based violence (GBV-F). Over the years, the campaign has equipped more than 1,580 individuals, including police officers, correctional officers, healthcare professionals, social workers, teachers, and community leaders with essential skills and knowledge to address GBV-F effectively. The training sessions cover a wide array of topics such as legislations, stress management, self-care, child protection, and sexual and reproductive health.

By fostering the capacity of frontline service providers and key community stakeholders, the initiative ensures a more robust and survivor-centered response to violence. These interventions not only empower participants to handle cases with greater empathy and professionalism but also promote systemic change by addressing harmful societal norms and enhancing collaboration among service providers.

Court preparation and support services for vulnerable witnesses

A significant part of #BreakFree's work involves supporting survivors of GBV-F by providing psychosocial support, trauma debriefing, building resilience and confidence, court preparation, as well as creating awareness about various mental health challenges.

Additionally, the pillar has been able to provide support persons for vulnerable witnesses when they are giving their testimonies in court and fill a much-needed gap in the interest of justice.

#BreakFree Anti-Violence pledges

The #BreakFree Anti-Violence pledges were launched in 2019. Since then, ONE has actively distributed these pledges through mobilisation and prevention activities. Over the years, #BreakFree has successfully raised awareness of Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBV-F) and inspired 13,264 young people to take a stand against violence by signing the pledge forms.
