On the 01 August 2025, the #BeFree movement in collaboration with AYO Namibia, UNDP Namibia and NovaNam hosted ‘#Befree Big Talk: Solutions Now’ in Lüderitz. The event aimed to empower youth from the ǁKharas Region to drive change by linking local community-driven solutions to the SDGs.
In his welcoming remarks, Manu Namukomba, HR Manager at NovaNam said "We eagerly anticipate learning about youth-led solutions and exploring how we can collectively support their implementation and growth"
The Youth Solutions for Change session featured 3 young presenters from the ǁKharas Region: Albertina Iyambo, Jisreel Naruseb, and Geraldo Frederick. Each presented solutions to key community challenges aligned with the SDGs
The event proceeded with a high-level panel discussion, themed 'Intergenerational Change: Youth Foresight, Entrepreneurship & Sustainable Action for the SDGs', featuring James Mnyupe, Dr Christian Shingiro, Lucy Hooft and Jessy Abraham, moderated by Lelly Amunyela.
Mrs. Lucy Hooft said our education systems must empower young people by creating spaces where their voices can be heard and respected. Focus on inclusive engagement, encourage youth participation in dialogues, decision-making processes, and learner-led initiatives.
James Mnyupe gave an overview of projects that are positively impacting youth in Luderitz such as Kelp Blue and the regional impact that Green Hydrogen has. He advised learners not to limit their tertiary education choices, as projects often require a range of professionals.
Jessy Abraham spoke about being teachable as a leader and a young person. “As a leader, I am a combination of all the leaders I have come across,” said Jessy. “Even though you have a mentor, build an identity that speaks to you and your generation,” she added.
Dr Christian Shingiro, shared opportunities through platforms like Youth Konnekt, where young people can connect with funders and peers across the continent. Namibia has a good educational system and now needs networking opportunities, skills building and more visibility.
In her closing remarks, Pauline Thomas Kahupi, ED at One Economy Foundation, said "We brought the energy, we kept it real and we made it practical." She thanked all participants, partners and the schools that were in attendance for today's conversations.
